Today’s planned speed work started with a strong desire to take a nap. I headed to the bicycle path at the park anyway. Sure enough, 15 minutes into the warm up, I knew this was just going to be one of those days. You know the ones… heavy legs, elevated heart rate, scattered mind.
It’s perfectly okay to give in to these days, once in a while. The key is to head out for 15 minutes anyway. At the very worst, you turn around and head home. It takes another 15 minutes to get home and you get in a 30 minute easy paced run. Sometimes, the warm up is all that’s needed to shake the cobwebs out of the head and you feel fine for the workout. Other times, like today, it’s a recovery run.
Rearrange the schedule for the rest of the week and try to get in your key workouts without resorting to doing back-to-back hard days. I’ll drop the tempo run this week and still get in one speed session, a marathon paced workout, and my long run. The week will still be a good week and I don’t have to beat myself up over one off day.
Listen to your body and be flexible in your workouts.
